Steve has also been Senior Attorney with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District since 1992. He previously served as Assistant Chief Counsel and Hearing Officer with the California Public Utilities Commission, and as a volunteer Judge Pro Tem in the Sacramento Small Claims Court.

Vice Mayor Steve Cohn was first elected to the Sacramento City Council in November of 1994. Since then, he has been re-elected three times: in 1998, March of 2002, and in November of 2006. He was elected by his peers as Vice Mayor in 2008. Steve's current term on the City Council expires in 2010.

Vice Chair and past Chair of Regional Transit, Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency, Capitol Corridor [Rail] Joint Powers Authority and Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) Chairman, City Council’s Law & Legislation Committee. Chair of the Sacramento Regional Arts Financing Authority.Co-founder of the Capital Unity Council, formed in 1999 to establish a Unity Center to fight hate crimes and intolerance. Board member of the Center for Youth Citizenship. Co-founder of the East Sacramento Chamber of Commerce. Member, Midtown Business Association and the Point West Area Business Association. Previously served as Chairman of the Board of the Sacramento Transportation Authority, Sacramento Regional Solid Waste Authority and the Sacramento Public Library Authority, and as a Board member of the Sacramento Metropolitan Cable Television Commission, Welfare-to-Work Policy Board, Northern California World Trade Center, SACTO (alt.) and the Sacramento County Water Board. Before election to the Council, coached soccer in the East Sacramento Youth Soccer League and baseball in the Old Sac Little League; and served as President of the East Sacramento Improvement Association, member of the Mayor’s Council of Economic Development Advisers, founding member of the Pops in the Park Committee, and Board member and Chair of the Parent Teacher Council’s Science and Technology Committee at Leonardo Da Vinci School, where he started the annual arts and science fair in 1990.  2001 Metro Chamber of Commerce’s City Elected Official of the Year Award Sierra Club Award for Civic Courage  ESIA Orchid Award Winner for Community Service
